Women in Engineering at British Airways

Women from diverse backgrounds help shape the future of Engineering at British Airways across a wide range of roles.

Woman working in engineering at British Airway

There’s no single route in

To mark International Women in Engineering Day, we met with women across our Engineering teams about how they have developed a rewarding career.

Lia began as an apprentice working directly on aircraft before moving into technical records then into production planning.

Grace joined the business with transferable experience and progressed into Engineering Safety and Compliance.

From a very young age, Sugam was fascinated by the way things work and now enjoys the opportunity to be hands-on with the systems that keep our aircraft future-proof.

Many opportunities to make impact

Our Engineering roles take many forms, from resolving technical issues on live aircraft to planning maintenance schedules and supporting safety and compliance. Each role plays an integral part in our mission to be the safest and most reliable airline maintenance organisation in the world.  Some of the priorities we all share include:

  • Creative problem-solving in action – our Engineers regularly develop practical solutions on the ground, adapting quickly to keep aircraft operating safely and efficiently
  • Design and innovation – from introducing new aircraft features to improving systems and processes, Engineering helps our operation keep pace with change in the aviation industry and the wider world
  • Safety at the core – every role contributes to identifying risks, resolving technical issues and maintaining the highest safety standards across our fleet
  • Collaboration and inclusion – colleague-run networks such as WINGS (Women’s Inclusion Network Group for Success) support gender equality and create an environment where everyone can contribute and grow
  • Building the future of engineering – through our Emerging Talent programmes for students and progression opportunities, we continue to invest in the next generation of women in Engineering.

“Everyday it gave a buzz to be at the airport and knowing you made a difference ensuring the people on board still made it to their destination because our team fixed a defect on their aircraft was very rewarding.”
