Our commitment to a sustainable future of aviation
We know that aviation has a significant environmental impact. As a hard to abate sector, we have a responsibility not only to acknowledge this challenge, but to lead with action. Through our BA Better World programme, we’re doing just that – working to reduce our environmental impact while endeavouring to create positive social change.
Our progress so far
While recognising there’s still more to do, we’re proud to share the progress we’ve made so far. Some of our recent highlights include:
- 14% reduction in the carbon intensity of our operations since 2019
- Operating with 4.5% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)
- Launching SAF for Tier Points and bespoke SAF options for corporate customers
- Expanding sustainable aviation fuel initiatives and customer options
- Supporting the growth of carbon removal technologies
- Reducing single-use plastics, achieving an 18% reduction since 2022
- Supporting over 170 UK-based social and environmental projects through the BA Better World Community Fund
- Improving accessibility through new offerings and innovative partnerships, such as Hearlo, a mobile app designed to overcome communication barriers for customers with speech or hearing disabilities.
- Improving accessibility through new partnerships and services
- Strengthening and recertifying our environmental compliance programme
- Continuing to strengthen our environmental standards and compliance.
Sustainability across every role
As part of our vision to build a culture of sustainability, we’re working to weave more sustainable practices throughout our operations and decision making.
We see our sustainability commitments as being integral to all British Airways roles, as we believe that all our colleagues can make a positive contribution to people and the planet. This includes contributing ideas, collaborating across teams and helping to drive improvements that have a lasting impact.
We’re also making sustainability a key focus from day one – from integrating sustainability into our new colleague induction programme, through to recurring cabin crew and pilot learning and development. All colleagues can make a difference!
