The role:
Airport Duty Manager - Gatwick
Ground Operations at Gatwick Airport sits at the heart of our airline’s daily performance, ensuring that every flight operates safely, compliantly, and on time. The Airport Duty Manager is part of a visible, on-site leadership team responsible for overseeing the end‑to‑end ground operation for both BA Euroflyer and BA Mainline flights at Gatwick.
This department plays a vital role in protecting our customers’ experience and the airline’s reputation by coordinating operational delivery, managing disruption, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance, and working closely with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. Strong decision‑making, leadership under pressure, and a focus on continuous improvement are essential, making the Airport Duty Manager function a key contributor to the success and resilience of our operation.
What you’ll do:
- Lead the on‑the‑day delivery of BA Euroflyer and BA Mainline ground operations at Gatwick, ensuring a safe, compliant, and punctual operation.
- Provide visible, on‑site leadership across the operation, including during periods of disruption, coordinating effective responses with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Conduct routine operational checks, inspections, and complete required checklists in line with company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Act as a key decision‑maker during operational challenges, protecting the customer experience and overall business performance.
- Maintain effective relationships with our ground handler GGS, and other service providers to support operational readiness and compliance.
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure adherence to BA and BA Euroflyer policies, procedures, and industry standards.
What you’ll bring to British Airways:
- Strong operational decision‑making skills, with the ability to lead confidently during both routine operations and periods of disruption.
- Proven ability to manage safety, compliance, and operational standards in a fast‑paced, regulated environment.
- Clear and effective communicator, able to engage positively with colleagues, senior leaders, airport authorities, and external suppliers.
- Calm, resilient, and pragmatic under pressure, with the confidence to make timely, risk‑based decisions.
- Strong leadership presence, demonstrating visibility, accountability, and professionalism on the operation.
- Sound judgement with a customer‑focused mindset, balancing commercial priorities with safety and compliance.
- Organised and detail‑focused, capable of completing inspections, checklists, and operational reporting accurately.
- Positive role model for safety culture, operational discipline, and teamwork.
- Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to work shifts and respond to changing operational demands.
Your experience:
- Proven experience in airport or aviation ground operations, ideally within a complex, multi‑stakeholder environment.
- Demonstrable experience of leading on‑the‑day operations, including managing disruption and making time‑critical operational decisions.
- Strong working knowledge of safety, compliance, and regulatory requirements within an aviation or similarly regulated industry.
- Experience of working closely with internal teams and external service providers to deliver operational performance and customer outcomes.
- Ability to work flexibly across early, late, weekend, and peak operational periods to provide visible leadership presence at the airport.
