Workshop Machinist - Technician

The Fleet Support Facility (FSF) specialize in metal and composite repairs on flying controls, engine D-ducts (thrust reversers), radomes, fairings & panels and numerous other aircraft components, both structural and non-structural. We have a wide range of workshop skills and capabilities, from anodising to welding and everything in between; we also have dedicated on-wing support teams that operate 24/7 to support British Airways and other customers.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a hugely skilled and experienced team carrying out component repair within the workshop facility and On-Wing repairs on our fleet of aircraft.

You will be an integral part of the Fleet Support Facility (FSF) team of Engineers, Technicians and Mechanics.  You will be provided with opportunities to develop your existing skills and knowledge whilst gaining invaluable new ones.

What you’ll do:

  • Responsible for performing and certifying the Rectification of defects IAW Approved Maintenance Data
  • Component Changes arising from Schedule Maintenance Inspections
  • Perform Maintenance Tasks that fall within Scope of Workshop Authorisation
  • Fluent in performing General Visual Inspections, Detailed Visual Inspections and other methods of Surveillance Inspection, Maintenance Checks and Tasks as defined within limitations of Approved Authorisation
  • Will issue Certificate Release to Service
  • Will develop and train and knowledge share and provide coaching
  • Perform PC based documentary transactions as required and make full use of modern technologies/processes

What you’ll bring to British Airways:

  • You will demonstrate good interpersonal and people skills and be an effective communicator
  • You will have good analytical and problem-solving skills and be PC literate
  • You can work with engineering and document management systems
  • Experience in an aviation environment is desirable but not essential
  • Able to work shifts
  • Ability to hold Airside Pass to support “On Wing” tasks (desirable)
  • Must be competent in reading and interpreting Engineering data and other technical publications, to maximise use of work scope authorisation.
  • Ability to write Engineering data e.g. job cards
  • Proactively demonstrates sound safety culture
  • Self-motivated
  • Good written & verbal communication skills
  • Capable of working without supervision and as part of, or leading a team
  • Technical Decision Making
  • Demonstrates good airmanship
  • Ability to Plan & Prioritise their workload.

Your experience:

  • You will need to have experience in general machining: Jig Boring, Milling and Turning. (Essential)
  • You will have an apprenticeship in an Engineering discipline or equivalent qualifications.
  • You will have good engineering hand skills and must be able to follow procedures and technical documentation
  • Recognised Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent
  • Recognised educational qualification NVQ Level 3 in an Aeronautical / Engineering discipline or equivalent
  • Experience working in an aircraft maintenance environment as appropriate to hold workshop authorisation
  • Experience of working with SAP and Production support processes
  • Understanding of internal procedures and awareness of Quality, Health Safety, Human Factors and Environmental legislative requirements
  • PC literate and good understanding of BA Engineering IT systems
  • Understanding of BA employment policies and processes
